Closed Circuit Camera Monitoring Community Partnerships

Posted by Niagara Regional Police Service on Wednesday, September 30th, 2020

Closed circuit camera systems have been shown to be an effective tool in crime prevention, solving crimes and locating persons in need of assistance.

In 2012 the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) in conjunction with the City of St. Catharines saw to the installation of video cameras in the downtown core of St. Catharines. Over the years, the footage from the cameras has led to the solving of crimes in the city. The 28 cameras are in the downtown area.

More recently the cities of Niagara Falls and Port Colborne have partnered with the NRPS to assist in the installation and monitoring of video cameras in their communities.

The camera in Port Colborne monitors the downtown core area.

The seven cameras in Niagara Falls have been placed to monitor the Tourist area and highly populated areas.

The RTOC in conjunction with the City of Niagara Falls and St. Catharines have plans to add further cameras in the near future. The cameras are owned and maintained by the NRPS.

The footage from all the cameras can be accessed by members of the NRPS Real Time Operations Centre. The accessing of the cameras is done on an incident driven basis and through intelligence led crime prevention.

The RTOC program was designed and operates in compliance with the program guidelines as set out by the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario .
